Novel Days Celebrates: Banned Books Week

Photobucket

I'm happy to be able to take part in my first Banned Books Week!

Have you noticed that the most thought provoking and enlightening books are often banned by governments, schools, or parents? Just thinking about this kind of censorship irritates me, because it takes away our freedom to ponder, to agree or disagree, or to be introduced to something new. I can tell you that there are some books that I think should be more age appropriate regarding books marketed to younger readers, however, I would never go as far as seeking to ban them. As a Christian raised in a conservative household, I cannot thank my parents enough for allowing me to immerse myself in the written word. They never once shielded me from reading (and they're Pastors). Of course, there will always be topics, or stances that we disagree with, but power is not gained by censoring them. The reason I am able to believe and stand the way I do is because I was given the choice to stand of my own free will. Pick up a censored book this week and read it with glee!

Here are some of my favorite Banned Picks:

I consider The Diary of Anne Frank to be one of the most courageous autobiographies of all time. It was one of the first autobiographies I read when I was little, and I like to think it's what really drove my passion to journal, and my passion to write. God really used her, in that she still continued her positive outlook, even while being trapped in the space behind the bookcase. Although the ending seems bleak, her words and her spirit will always be a source of inspiration to readers all over the world.

I believe Ellen Hopkins is the most challenged author in the last few years, as her subject matter falls in 'taboo' category. Unfortunately, I've only read the first of the Crank series, but it was such an influential read. More people than ever have experienced the effects of Crystal Meth, and it's worth taking note of, and understand how it can ravage an individual as well as their families. Ellen Hopkins is also known for weaving a fully layered, awesome novel in verse.

Go Ask Alice is another novel with heavy focuses on drug use and depression. I'll admit that it is tough to take in, but it is no less profound because of it. I tried reading it through when I was little, but I feel I might glean more from it now that I understand the place that it's coming from. My mom gave me her weathered, dog-eared copy from the 70s, so when I was little I felt like I had a little piece of the time. What's most haunting about it is that no one knows whether it is autobiographical or fictional...this adds to its powerful effect on readers. Though it may not be everyone's cup of tea, it's worth reading even once, to understand the lives of what could be countless others who have sought to live up to perfection, and slipped in the process.

I'm sure you all saw this one coming. What's more awesome in the great YA Dystopia than The Hunger Games? I picked mine up last year during the release of Mockingjay. With multiple recommendations, I knew I had to give it a chance. I couldn't have been more please with this novel! I love that somehow, I can always use this novel as inspiration to stand up against whatever I'm facing. It's also profound how most dystopian novels can be connected to how the world actually is. Suzanne Collins is pretty much a genius for coming up with such an engrossing tale, and a heroine that drives you to continue the journey with her!

This week, I've been catching up on my reading of Delirium by Lauren Oliver. It's the perfect novel to read, as it's a dystopian piece full of awesome banned literature and music!

I had loads of trouble coming up with titles to showcase this week, there are simply too many awesome ones. What are your Banned Book Week picks?

Book Haul #1

Photobucket

Hey Guys! I've finally finished my dissertation (I'm literally doing the running man across my kitchen floor right now), so that means more book frenzies in the future, God Willing!

During my dissertation period, I spent more time reading YA than what I should've been, and I thought, why not do my first Novel Day's book haul.
  • The Outsiders by S.E Hinton: I must have passed this novel on every bookshop run since I was born, and it's only this year that I've become a bit taken with it. I haven't started it yet, but I'm ready to learn the source of the saying, 'Stay Gold.'
  • Stay With Me by Paul Griffin: I've recently turned my sights to YA realistic fiction. I'm loving the hardships, the grit, and all that beautiful love at the end of the day. Stay With Me captured my attention on Good Reads, immediately, and it doesn't hurt that it has mostly good reviews.
  • Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel: I found this little novel whilst pilfering through stacks at the Housing Works Thrift store in New York for my birthday, and it's managed to become quite a serendipitous find. It's told in magical recipe's, love stories, and old fashioned telenovela drama. It reminds me a bit of Don Quixote by Cervantes. I also used it for part of my dissertation, so I found it right on time!
  • Gothic Lolita by Dakota Lane: I found this on one of my Strand runs. No matter what, I'll always come home with an obscure, indie novel when I shop there. This novel caught my attention because I adore subcultures, and the fashion of Gothic Lolita's has long sense fascinated me. Throw in the fashion, a bit of angst, two bloggers, and a mystery surrounding what's happened to one of them...and you've got my attention. Dakota Lane's photography scattered throughout the book is hauntingly beautiful as well. I have hopes to employ this concept on my own novel.
  • The Beginning of After by Jennifer Castle: I was drawn in immediately by it's beautiful cover. It's simplistically gorgeous with it's light flares! The story-line of a girl falling for the guy who's father killed her parents and brother makes it entirely intriguing!
  • The Hidden by Jessica Verday: I've already harped about my love for the Hollow series in my last post, but I felt I had mention it again. It's FABULOUS! I'm currently planning my Hollow Week blog event, so stay tuned. Check it out, and stick it through to the second novel, and I promise you won't be dissapointed!
  • Leaving Paradise and Return to Paradise by Simone Elkeles: I admit that since my crash dive into the Fuentes Brother's (Perfect Chemistry Series) I haven't been able to get Simone Elkeles out of my mind! I thought I'd move on to her other novels, and so far it's been an awesome journey! Elkekes has a talent in creating bad boy/good girl scenarios that are so believable that I find I'll always love them!

I forgot to include this book in the graphic above, but had to include it, nonetheless. I found, Amy Inspired, during one of the Border's Going-Out-Of-Business sales (moment of silence), and at first I was mainly drawn to it's cover, which I find lovely. But with a synopsis involving a woman who's in need of inspiration after having taken on undergraduate/graduate degrees in Creative Writing with no success, I felt the Lord was speaking directly to me! Amy Inspired is a Christian Inspirational novel that will hopefully move me to press through my writing issues and enjoy an awesome story!

Reviews to come for all of these novels in the next month or so! I hope you all are having an awesome week so far!

A love that knows no bounds
Abbey knows that Caspian is her destiny. Theirs is a bond that transcends even death. But as Abbey finally learns the full truth about the dark fate that links her to Caspian and ties them both to the town of Sleepy Hollow, she suddenly has some very hard choices to make. Caspian may be the love of her life, but is that love worth dying for?
Beautifully spun, emotionally gripping, and irresistibly romantic, The Hidden will leave you breathless.
“Spectacular! The Hollow keeps you reading from beginning to end without coming up for air.” --L.J. Smith, bestselling author of The Vampire Diaries and Night World

- Barnes & Noble

I'm SOOO excited for this finale! This series has followed me through several important moments in my life, making me all the more bias to it. Nevertheless, The Hollow Series is a jewel in YA Supernatural fiction! Jessica Verday has penned a wonderful gothic romance that is incredibly fresh and layered. I've not only fallen in love with Caspian and Abbey's romance, but also the lovely details of which Verday embeds in her descriptions of Sleepy Hollow, Abbey's perfuming talent, and the mystery surrounding them! The series in incredibly addictive, and as I said earlier, I'm so excited to finish it off, though sad that it's over! I may even do a little series of posts on this towards the end of this month...watch out for it!

Happy Book Birthday, Jessica Verday, and thanks for an awesome series! Looking forward to your next work!
